The problem with damp in basements & cellars
Damp is a significant problem in basements due to their below-ground position and proximity to the soil. This is a result of:
Water table and groundwater
Basements are often located below the water table level, making them prone to water seepage. When the soil surrounding the basement becomes saturated, hydrostatic pressure can force water into the basement through cracks and gaps.
Poor drainage
Inadequate or blocked drainage systems around the basement can lead to water pooling around the foundation. This water can find its way into the basement, causing dampness and potential flooding.
Construction materials
Older buildings might have inadequate or outdated waterproofing methods, making them more susceptible to dampness. Even in newer constructions, flaws in waterproofing or improper installation can lead to damp issues.
Lack of ventilation
Basements usually have limited natural ventilation, leading to poor air circulation. This trapped moisture can condense on cool surfaces, promoting damp conditions.
Humidity
Everyday activities, like laundry and bathing, can generate indoor humidity. In a basement with poor ventilation, this moisture can contribute to dampness.
Cracks and leaks
Over time, a building's foundation may develop cracks, providing pathways for water to enter the basement.
Dampness in basement cellars is impossible to remedy using chemical damp proof injection, since moisture ingress is due to lateral water penetration.
What is Wall Tanking?
Wall tanking is a waterproofing technique used to prevent water penetration and dampness in below-ground or susceptible areas of a building, such as basements or cellars.
It involves applying a waterproof membrane or coating to the interior surface of the walls, creating a barrier that prevents moisture from seeping through and causing damage to the structure. This method effectively protects the building from water ingress, ensuring a dry and habitable space, especially in areas with high groundwater levels or where dampness is a concern.
Choose Fortress One to Damp Proof Your Basement or Cellar
Fortress One uses up-to-date, modern waterproofing materials which provide excellent adhesion to prepared surfaces and results in excellent basement damp proofing.
We have over 25 years of experience working with running water and water seepage below ground-level basements and in confined spaces where water pressure is evident. We will provide a detailed design to prevent water and dampness ingress.
We prepare an individual specification unique to each job site for underground waterproofing. This incorporates several other proven products as well as chemical suppliers’ recommendations and specifications which may be used when waterproofing brick, concrete or stone walls below ground level, to provide a protection against water pressure and ingress.
Our survey was incredibly detailed and thorough, and Brian was deeply knowledgeable and generous with his time and expertise. Work was reasonably priced and though work was needed to be carried out over more days than expected, this did not amount to extra cost for us. Overall, could not recommend Fortress One highly enough.
