What is rising damp and what causes it?
Rising damp is caused by a capillary flow of water from the ground into a wall where a damp-proof course is not present. A damp zone might extend at least 60cm/2ft above the skirting board.
The erection of new buildings in the surrounding area can cause changes in the water table. New or broken drains can cause water to soak away into the ground or stay backed up against a building’s foundations. Additionally, the removal of shrubbery and trees can interfere with drainage and cause water to build up against the walls of a building.
Dampness and a lack of ventilation can affect your respiratory system if left untreated. Internal floor timbers bearing into the wall will suffer from moisture and possible decay from both fungus and insects along with the breakdown in the surface plaster and mould.
